BOY GOES GIRLY by Toni Villafuerte

DISCLAIMER: It took me a while to write the next installment of this blog series and for that, I'm really sorry. I didn't know exactly what to do next and I have a life so I had to do a few things first before I could go back to writing. Hahaha. But just the same, I promise that this next installment is just as fun and mindless as its predecessor. Enjoy.

BTW, the rights for the video clips you see in this blog is not mine. I just posted stuff I found on YouTube. Thanks.

Boy Goes Girly Part 2: Chick Flicks

The summer heat lately has been crazy. No, it’s completely INSANE!!! I’ve been sweating in parts of my body I never even knew existed and it’s just plain torture. While for some of my friends the solution is to head out to the nearest air-conditioned mall, my remedy to the bummer summer heat is equally cooling and entertaining sans the huge credit card bills!

Turn the AC on (or the fan) at home, make a pitcher of your favorite drink (with lots of ice of course) and grab whatever decent snack you can find and sit in front of the television and voila!!!

CHICK FLICK INVASION!

Hahaha. Here are some of my favorites just in case you need suggestions.

28 Days (Sandra Bullock)

We start with something from the queen of romantic comedies, Ms. Bullock. 28 Days is the story of Gwen, a typical New Yorker with a drinking problem and her journey to self-discovery and love for self and family while inside a rehabilitation centre. The dialogues are completely witty and overall, very well written. The plot is something completely relatable because we all have things we hate about ourselves.

Before Sunset (Ethan Hawke)

I love movies about traveling and adventure. Although this movie isn’t about the beautiful city of Paris, it showcased what the love capital of France had to offer. It talks about one’s journey through love and pain in the eyes and words of the two main characters.

There are only two people who talked in this movie (minus the extras of course) so you have to pay attention to the dialogue for it to make sense to you AND watch Before Sunrise so you have an idea what they were talking about in the early part of the film. When you have those days when you don’t want to talk and just listen, pop this movie and watch it. I even “watch” it sometimes while I do something else because I just listen.

Connie & Carla (Nia Vardalos and Toni Collete)

This movie will just cheer you up with its MASSIVE dosage of Broadway and gayness! It’s about friends Connie and Carla and their hilarious ways of trying to avoid being killed by a drug syndicate for witnessing the killing of a coworker. Because they needed to hide, it forced them to become drag queens in Los Angeles and become part of the whole dinner theatre scene. It may not be a film you can learn something from, but it sure is entertaining.

Father Of The Bride (Steve Martin and Diane Keaton)

Steve Martin’s character, George, is father to Annie, a beautiful girl who’s about to marry a guy they’ve never met. While preparing for the wedding, George slowly discovers that her baby girl is now a grown-up and is ready to face marriage. It’s a definite must-watch for those days when you imagine how your own wedding will turn out.

How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days (Matthew McConaughey and Kate Hudson)

It stars Kate Hudson and Matthew McConaughey’s abs!!! Enough said. =)

It’s a fun fun fun movie to watch for those who wants to believe that one day, they will find someone who’s going to accept all the unbelievable bullshit people carry around. Andie Anderson (Hudson) works for Composure, a hot woman’s magazine in NY and needed to go undercover for a piece she was writing. She then meets the subject of her social experiment, Benjamin (McConaughey), an advertising executive who’s just as ready to do everything to win a bet and ultimately land his firm’s biggest account. Cute stars, interesting storylines and some very witty dialogue. Two thumbs up!

The Proposal (Sandra Bullock, Betty White and Ryan Reynolds)

If you still haven’t seen this movie, you’ve been sleeping under a rock for about some time now. It’s about Katherine (Bullock), a publishing executive who forced her assistant (Reynolds) into marriage to avoid deportation to her native Canada. She then meets Andrew’s family and discovers what she’s really lacking in her life.

The Devil Wears Prada (Meryl Streep and Anne Hathaway)

This has got to be one of the best-casted movie I have ever seen. Nobody can ever play the character of Miranda Priestley better than Streep! Although Andrea (Hathaway) is the focus of the story, Miranda Priestley steals the show, well in this case, movie. This movie was based on a book written by a former intern at Vogue and says that the antagonist is based on a real life lady dragon, the infamous Anna Wintour. That’s all. =)

Under The Tuscan Sun (Diane Lane and Sandra Oh)

This movie is such a treat! It combines my love for traveling, good food and a good story. Frances (Lane) is a book critic who faces the big challenge of surviving the aftermath of a painful divorce in a foreign land. She goes to Tuscany, a beautiful town in Italy, on a gay tour courtesy of her gay sister and buys a house and rebuilds it. The house became the beautiful analogy for her life symbolic of her personal transformation and search for self-love. It was very cleverly written and a cinematography masterpiece. Go get your gelato and enjoy this gorgeous movie.

Eat Pray Love (Julia Roberts)

Based on the book with the same title, this movie just made me cry buckets in the cinema. Liz (Roberts), a travel writer, goes through a process of self-discovery on foreign lands so to speak.

After suddenly realizing her emptiness (as brought about by her failed marriage and relationships), she then packs up her bag and flies to three countries with high hopes of being healed by her emotional journey.

First stop was Italy where she marveled at the beauty of Rome and its wonderful food. She then flies to India to nourish her spiritual starvation and then goes to Bali in Indonesia to complete the cycle and meet up with Kutut, Bali’s wonder man. Needless to say, she found love in Indonesia and found love in herself.

This entire blog/movie review is completely based on my chick flick-watching history. I have seen these movies and actually a lot more but that will come in the next installment. Enjoy.

I love the ending of "After Sunset" with the Nina Simone playing at the end. Makes me wanna watch it again.

Also, watch the documentary film "The September Issue." It's not chick flick all over but if you wanna know more about Anna Wintour, this is the film to watch.

I gotta say that Eat, Pray & Love. Made me sob all over too. lolz
